Helen practiced as a dental therapist before her academic appointment in 1999. During her time in Otago she was Head of Discipline for the Bachelor of Oral Health 1999 – Dec 2005; from 2006 Program Leader & Senior Lecturer for the Bachelor in Oral Health (therapy/hygiene) at AUT University and from 2009 Head of Discipline and Senior Lecturer at Charles Sturt University, NSW.

Helen’s research in public health has been published in dental journals, contributed to a textbook for health science students and used as a CPD resource for registered British dental professionals, and also been presented at international and national conferences. In 2014, Helen was the recipient of the American Dental Education Association scholarship to present at the 2014 conference and keynote speaker for the ADOHTA 2015 conference.

Helen was a curriculum writer for the world’s first graduate program for oral health therapists, has been on the editorial committee for the peer reviewed ANZJDOHT for a number of years, and continues work with the ADC to accredit BOH programs. She has been the professional leader for dental and oral health therapy, Auckland Regional Dental Services since 2017.
